Far away on the surface of the Sun, giant eruptions and sunspots release clouds of charged particles called the solar wind. During stronger events like solar flares and coronal mass ejections, this solar wind becomes denser and faster, which usually means brighter, more dynamic aurora displays for northern lights hunters.

As this electrically charged solar wind travels the 150 million kilometres to Earth, it carries part of the Sun’s magnetic field with it. Space-weather scientists monitor these streams because the chance of an intense aurora show increases.

High above our head, usually between about 80 and 300 kilometres altitude, the incoming particles crash into atoms and molecules of oxygen and nitrogen in the thin upper atmosphere. These collisions “excite” the gas, and when the atoms relax again, they release energy as light, creating the familiar green, red, and purple colours that fill your long-exposure northern lights photos.

RARE COLORS
To see the elusive blue Northern Lights is the "holy grail" of aurora hunting; these rare, sunlit emissions typically appear only around the equinox, when ionized nitrogen at the very edge of space catches the light of the sun.
In rare occasions, Northern lights can even display beautiful red colors.
